In this newsletter, we give a description of the plots for two movies, picked at random, as well as the year they were made and, just for fun, take the challenge and see if you can guess what they are. You can send your answers in but, be warned - the ONLY prize is the joy of knowing you got either or both right!! The answers will follow in the next newsletter. Just send your guesses, whether you only know one, or both, or even if you're not sure, in the BODY of the message to mailto:namethatmovie@namethatmovie.net Closing time for entries is 9am, Eastern Australian Time, on the Monday or Thursday following each newsletter. Write to us if you're not sure what that time is where you are.

We reset the scores when 1,000 points is reached. Ten points are awarded for one correct answer, twenty-five points (including a bonus five points) if you get both right. If you have any queries about your scores, please write and let us know.

Here are the answers to the two movies from Monday, 28th January, 2008:

Answer to movie number one:

The first movie for Monday was from 1995 and, inspired by a true story, tells of a time in the 1930s and a criminal who was sent to a prison that no one had ever escaped from. He, however, is caught trying to escape and, as punishment, he is put into an area all by himself. Supposedly, the punishment is only to last a few days but he stays there for years - alone and in complete darkness. When he emerges it is as a madman and he soon kills a fellow prison inmate. A rookie lawyer is assigned to prove that the prison was to blame and that the killer should not be put to death for his crime.

This movie was "Murder in the First", directed by Marc Rocco and starring Kevin Bacon, Gary Oldman and William H. Macy. The script was written by Dan Gordon.

Answer to movie number two:

The second movie for Monday was from 1968 and tells of a psychotic theatrical entrepreneur who takes to killing drab middle-aged women - mostly with his bare hands. He does this as a way of working out his hang-ups over his deceased mother. He employs a variety of disguises, accents and mannerisms, using a different one every time he kills - as a way of throwing the authorities off his track and to confuse them into believing each murder is committed by different people instead of by a serial killer.

This movie was "No Way to Treat a Lady", directed by Jack Smight and starring Rod Steiger, Lee Remick and George Segal. The script was written by John Gay.

The first movie for today is from 1964 and, based on a novel, tells of a man who is in the lower ranks of the totem pole of an advertising agency in the American west coast area. However, his star rises quickly when he suggests a new approach built around the average man on the street in a campaign for a dissatisfied client about to get rid of the agency. Suddenly he is important business-wise. He also finds himself called upon to play the husband to a divorced lady who lives in his area. She must come up with a spouse if she is to meet the provisions of her grandfather’s will bequeathing her his million-dollar estate.

The second movie for today is from 1991 and tells of a young man who works for a government department, working in a harbour while waxing lyrical about the importance of dreams - and how honest the creatures in the harbour are. He is interrupted when a relative of his arrives on the scene. The relative is sent by another relative - a rich salesman in another state - to bring him home for the salesman’s wedding. Back with the relatives, he meets a suicidal heiress, and her flaky stepmother - with whom he becomes involved. The answers will be in Monday's edition. Good luck.
