Here are the answers to the two movies from Thursday, 17th January, 2008:
Answer to movie number one:
The first movie for Thursday was from 1959 and tells of a European geologist who travels with a student to a Nordic region as part of a planned descent into a volcano. There, they meet a woman whose husband has previously been killed in a similar attempt. She joins their expedition, along with a young Nordic man and his pet. They begin the descent, imperiled by prehistoric beasts, rock slides and an evil aristocrat. It was the aristocrat who murdered the woman’s husband previously and it is he who is determined to reach the destination first.
This movie was "Journey to the Centre of the Earth", directed by Henry Levin and starring Pat Boone, James Mason and Arlene Dahl. The script was written by Charles Brackett and Walter Reisch and was based on the novel of the same name by Jules Verne. Academy Award ® nominations were received for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration (Colour), Best Sound and Best Special Effects.
Answer to movie number two:
The second movie for Thursday was from 2003 and tells of the one-time associate editor of a major newspaper who had been caught making up stories for publication. Previously, he had attended a journalism class at his old high school, where he had been hailed a hometown hero. It is here that he attributes his success to his humility in a profession filled with egomaniacs. However, it is soon discovered that his meteoric rise had a lot to do with the nature of his stories. Instead of boring old policy pieces, his stories were filled with humour and colourful characters. One story seemed too good and, when a reporter from an online paper warns the current editor of the major newspaper that he’ll be running a story with very little truth to it, the career of the journalist comes to a screeching halt.
This movie was "Shattered Glass", written and directed by Billy Ray and starring Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard and Chloe Sevigny. The script was based on an article by H. G. "Buzz" Bissinger.
The first movie for today is from 1995 and tells of a small town in the eastern United States which is the centre of a media whirlwind involving a lovely local television personality and murder most foul. The personality is the brightly chatty narrator of her own bizarre story. Hell-bent on conquering the world of television, she’s prepared to bump off anyone who stands in her way. That’s too bad for her husband - a small town tavern keeper who saw his best days back in high school.
The second movie for today is from 1965 and tells of a time in the early 1940s and a dance at an officer’s club. A woman is there with her husband who is aboard one of the vessels in the area. She’s a party girl, however, and leaves with another officer. They go to the beach where she skinny dips. The commander of a battle wagon is also there. He is one of the few to get his vessel out of the area to relative safety when a major catastrophe hits the place - only to be hit by the weapon of another craft. Suffering a major injury, he is now confined to a desk job thanks to the fact that he deviated from standard orders at the time. He happens to meet a child he hadn’t seen for many years, who is now serving there as well. The commander fights to regain a command, which will help him to help his group win the battle. The answers will be in Thursday's edition. Good luck.
