Here are the answers to the two movies from Monday, 17th March, 2008:

Answer to movie number one:

The first movie for Monday was from 1996 and tells of a small town with a very strange name - for a town. There lives a mild-mannered accountant who decides to turn outlaw after shooting a man in what he claims was self-defence. Pursued by an unlikely team of gunslingers, he heads off for the wilderness. Here he finds himself a partner and spiritual guide in the person of a philosophical native - with a strange name of his own. The outlaw progresses from physical death to spiritual transcendence, while on his journey of escaping capture.

This movie was "Dead Man", written and directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Johnny Depp, Lance Henriksen and Gabriel Byrne.

Answer to movie number two:

The second movie for Monday was from 1956 and tells of a man who plays music at a nightclub in the United States. Although not well off, he manages to keep his life together with the help of his devoted wife. When she complains she is in pain, he decides to borrow on her insurance policy - which is the last place they can borrow from since no one else will lend to them - in order to pay for her treatment. When he attends to apply for the insurance, he is identified as a man who robbed them once and is arrested that night at the club. While being interrogated, he makes the same mistake the robber made on the hold up note and is charged and imprisoned. Once released, he is reunited with his wife and together they, and an attorney, try to find the culprit.

This movie was "The Wrong Man", produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Henry Fonda, Vera Miles and Anthony Quayle. The script was written by Angus Macphail and Maxwell Anderson and was based on Anderson’s book, "The True Story of Christopher Emmanuel Balestrero".

The first movie for today is from 1953 and tells of a rich playboy who makes the mistake of speeding through a tiny place which has a judge known for his sentences and punishments. He is jailed for a few weeks, thereby breaking up his elopement with a showgirl. He makes happy time, however, with the judge’s daughter - even talking her and the jailer into letting him out for a night into the big town nearby. The judge’s daughter goes along to ensure his return and, while there, love blooms - breaking up any hope of her marrying her current beau, whose father had hoped he would marry her and settle down to a clerking job instead of dreaming of the stage.

The second movie for today is from 1991 and tells of an actress who is a misery queen in her current show. She is at the peak of her glory but is going to pieces emotionally. A scheming woman is trying to take over the show by using her wiles to convince the slimy producer to have the misery queen’s character destroy her popularity by committing some unspeakable crime. To drive the actress even more over the edge, the producer surprises her by bringing back her long-ago flame whom she had had thrown off the show many years earlier. The show’s jaded head writer flips when told the actor is returning, given how his character had left and how he is supposed to be written back in. The answers will be in Monday's edition.
