Here are the answers to the two movies from Monday, 14th January, 2008:

Answer to movie number one:

The first movie for Monday was from 2002 and, based on a true story, tells of a police officer who has a conflicted past. His father was convicted of a kidnapping-related death involving a child and later executed for the crime. Many years ago, the police officer left his wife and child. He nowadays spends a lot of time, lonely and contemplating life, in his apartment above that of a woman with whom he is now having a casual affair. While the relationship is comfortable, it seems soon to be heading to a new level and become a serious commitment. He, however, finds himself at a mid-life crossroad. He must decide whether to go forward and not make the same mistakes all over again or let go now and live for his career.

This movie was "City by the Sea", directed by Michael Caton-Jones and starring Robert De Niro, Frances McDormand and Eliza Dushku. The script was written by Ken Hixon and was based on the article, "Mark of a Murderer" by Michael McAlary.

Answer to movie number two:

The second movie for Monday was from 1957 and tells of a surly good ole boy type lad who accidentally kills a man while defending a lady's honour. All this takes place in a bar where he and his buddies hang out. This act of heroism gets him sent to prison on a manslaughter charge. He shares his quarters with an ex-entertainer, who convinces him that he should perform in the revue put on by those incarcerated with them. Once he has completed his term and been freed, he meets a woman with whom he forms a company and soon he is a national star on his way to the big time. His partner, however, sees that he is turning into an egomaniac and she can't tolerate it.

This movie was "Jailhouse Rock", directed by Richard Thorpe and starring Elvis Presley, Judy Tyler and Dean Jones. The script was written by Guy Trosper and was based on a story by Ned Young.

The first movie for today is from 1959 and tells of a European geologist who travels with a student to a Nordic region as part of a planned descent into a volcano. There, they meet a woman whose husband has previously been killed in a similar attempt. She joins their expedition, along with a young Nordic man and his pet. They begin the descent, imperiled by prehistoric beasts, rock slides and an evil aristocrat. It was the aristocrat who murdered the woman’s husband previously and it is he who is determined to reach the destination first.

The second movie for today is from 2003 and tells of the one-time associate editor of a major newspaper who had been caught making up stories for publication. Previously, he had attended a journalism class at his old high school, where he had been hailed a hometown hero. It is here that he attributes his success to his humility in a profession filled with egomaniacs. However, it is soon discovered that his meteoric rise had a lot to do with the nature of his stories. Instead of boring old policy pieces, his stories were filled with humour and colourful characters. One story seemed too good and, when a reporter from an online paper warns the current editor of the major newspaper that he’ll be running a story with very little truth to it, the career of the journalist comes to a screeching halt.
