Answer to movie number one:
The first movie for Thursday was from 1966 and tells of a security agent who okays clearance for a top-level official who has been accused of Communist activities. When the official apparently commits suicide, the agent checks into the death and grows suspicious of the dead man’s widow. Before he can probe any deeper, he is taken off the case. Rather than bend to pressure from his superiors, he resigns and enlists the help of some fellow agents - and sets out to solve what is now clearly a murder. Complicating matters is the arrival of an agent who is a former friend of the investigating agent - who is also preparing to run off with his friends’ wife. Though tired of the game, the agent becomes even more enmeshed than he ever envisaged.
This movie was "The Deadly Affair", produced and directed by Sidney Lumet and starring James Mason, Simone Signoret and Maximillian Schell. The script was written by Paul Dehn and was based on the novel, "Call for the Dead", by John le Carre.
Answer to movie number two:
The second movie for Thursday was from 2003 and tells of a journalist who has been estranged from his father since his father monopolised his wedding with the umpteenth telling of a trip he once went on. When his long-suffering mother calls with the news that his father is dying, he makes the pilgrimmage home with just one goal in mind - to hear the plain, unvarnished story of his father’s life. However, his father can no more tell a straightforward story than he can send the grim reaper packing.
This movie was "Big Fish", directed by Tim Burton and starring Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney and Billy Crudup. The script was written by John August and based on the novel by Daniel Wallace. Danny Elfman received the only Academy Award ® nomination - for Best Original Score.
The first movie for today is from 2002 and, based on a true story, tells of a police officer who has a conflicted past. His father was convicted of a kidnapping-related death involving a child and later executed for the crime. Many years ago, the police officer left his wife and child. He nowadays spends a lot of time, lonely and contemplating life, in his apartment above that of a woman with whom he is now having a casual affair. While the relationship is comfortable, it seems soon to be heading to a new level and become a serious commitment. He, however, finds himself at a mid-life crossroad. He must decide whether to go forward and not make the same mistakes all over again or let go now and live for his career.
The second movie for today is from 1957 and tells of a surly good ole boy type lad who accidentally kills a man while defending a lady’s honour. All this takes place in a bar where he and his buddies hang out. This act of heroism gets him sent to prison on a manslaughter charge. He shares his quarters with an ex-entertainer, who convinces him that he should perform in the revue put on by those incarcerated with them. Once he has completed his term and been freed, he meets a woman with whom he forms a company and soon he is a national star on his way to the big time. His partner, however, sees that he is turning into an egomaniac and she can’t tolerate it. The answers will be in Thursday's edition. Good luck.
