Answer to movie number one:
The first movie for Thursday was from 1964 and, based on a novel, tells of a man who is in the lower ranks of the totem pole of an advertising agency in the American west coast area. However, his star rises quickly when he suggests a new approach built around the average man on the street in a campaign for a dissatisfied client about to get rid of the agency. Suddenly he is important business-wise. He also finds himself called upon to play the husband to a divorced lady who lives in his area. She must come up with a spouse if she is to meet the provisions of her grandfather’s will bequeathing her his million-dollar estate.
This movie was "Good Neighbour Sam", produced, directed and co-written by David Swift and starring Jack Lemmon, Romy Schneider and Edward G. Robinson. The script was written by James Fritzell and Everett Greenbaum with Swift. It was based on the novel by Jack Finney.
Answer to movie number two:
The second movie for Thursday was from 1991 and tells of a young man who works for a government department, working in a harbour while waxing lyrical about the importance of dreams - and how honest the creatures in the harbour are. He is interrupted when a relative of his arrives on the scene. The relative is sent by another relative - a rich salesman in another state - to bring him home for the salesman’s wedding. Back with the relatives, he meets a suicidal heiress, and her flaky stepmother - with whom he becomes involved.
This movie was "Arizona Dream", directed and co-written by Emir Kusturica and starring Johnny Depp, Jerry Lewis and Faye Dunaway. The script was co-written with David Atkins.
The first movie for today is from 2004 and tells of a man who is a stressed out senior executive in a large conglomerate. His job is threatened by an ambitious young business school graduate, while his yuppie wife sees more of her technical toys than she does of him. His children are typical hormone-filled teenagers with a biting sarcasm to add to the cocktail. When his boss forces him to cancel his family vacation in order to clinch a vital takeover, he rents a van and decides the family will, instead, take a road trip to the place where the takeover is being completed - except he doesn’t tell his family the real reason why that place of all places.
The second movie for today is from 1964 and tells of a runaway aerial performer who returns to watch one of her children rehearsing on the lot where she works. There were difficulties between them last time they met but, this time, there is a happy reunion. So happy that they end up performing together - but only after a terrible tragedy had hit the troupe they perform with. The answers will be in Thursday's edition. Good luck.
